Bioseminar

Bioseminar .This paper deals with the effect of platelet rich plasma on the immediate autologous bone grafts in a bone model using radiographic and histomorphometric analysis . PRP is used to increase the healing factor but the specific process and effect is generally unknown . Thirteen adult dogs were used for the study . Twelve dogs being given bilateral inferior mandibular border defect resections with the right defect immediately grafted with milled autologous iliac corticocancellous bone along with PRP while the left was identical to the right but without the PRP . These were sacrificed , with three dogs used at 1 , 2 , 3 , and 6 months . The thirteenth dog given only bilateral inferior border resections with PRP placed on the right and nothing on the left and was sacrificed at 6 months . Ten and 3 days before sacrifice all animals were injected tetracycline intravenously . The grafts along with adjacent native bone were harvested , fixed , radiographed , and processed for epifluorescence analysis . The analysis of the dogs showed significant density in non-PRP grafts compared to the PRP grafts , and no significant difference occurred at 3 and 6 months . Histomorphometric analysis exhibited more new bone than grafted at 1 and 2 months in the PRP treatment while no difference at 3 and 6 months . The bone apposition rates at both treatments did not significantly differ . PRP enhanced only the amount of non-viable bone removed and the amount of new one formed , and only until 2 months . PRP did not affect the rate at which new bone was formed , and no increase in trabecular density was realized in these grafts . The effects of an increase in PRP dosage as related to the enhancement and prolonging of the healing effect on analogous bone graft would be a viable follow up to this study .
